Happening in the World: In Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been elected as the first female president. The electoral commission declared she had won 57% of the vote with her closest opposition receiving 26%. The election was widely contested due to logistical problems with polling in some parts of the country. The opposing parties have disputed the election and claim that they will protest the results in court. When Nandi-Ndaitwah is sworn in, she will be one of two female presidents in the continent of Africa. (BBC)
Happening in the US: In Washington, an orca whale was seen balancing a salmon on its head. This behavior has intrigued animal scientists and orca watchers. The whale is known to marine biologists as the name “Blackberry,” and the Orca Network has been tracking the sightings of the individual whale. Scientists believe that this behavior may indicate that the whale is well-fed and this could be a natural part of the social behavior of orcas. (NBC)
Happening in NYC: In Manhattan, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare Inc. was shot outside of a New York Hilton Hotel. According to police, the attack was “premeditated, pre planned and targeted.” Thompson was on his way to speak at an event when the attacker approached him from behind and fatally shot him with multiple rounds. The motive for the attack is still unknown. (NBC)
Happening in Our Community: On Thursday, December 5, Haven Plaza will host a “Winter Haven Lighting.” The event will occur on Haven Avenue between Fort Washington Avenue and 169th Street. During the event, there will be warm drinks, snacks and a “festive lighting” included. The event is open to the public. (Columbia University Events)
