Happening in the World: Global health experts have expressed concern about the spread of disease in response to President Trump’s 90-day pause on funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID encompasses a large variety of health services worldwide, including nutrition, hygiene, and clean water. Doctors and researchers around the globe have warned that the funding pause could increase the transmission and impact of HIV, Tuberculosis, and other diseases. (BBC)
Happening in the US: In a special session on Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom set aside $50 million to fund the state Department of Justice and legal groups representing immigrants facing deportation. Newsom announced his intention to defend state policies last November, days after Trump’s election win. During Trump’s previous administration, California spent around $42 million in total on legal battles against the federal government. (AP)
Happening in NYC: On Friday, officials confirmed to Gothamist that the avian flu has lead to the deaths of a maximum of 15 birds at the Queen and Bronx zoos. Several birds outside of zoos, including a red tailed hawk and great horned owl, have also been killed by the disease. Vulnerable bird species are being moved to protected areas in an attempt to prevent further infection and death. (Gothamist)
Happening in Our Community: The Spring 2025 Barnard Club Fair will be held today from 2 to 4 pm in Barnard Hall. Student groups will be tabling in the James Room, Sulzberger Parlor, and 409. Registration is encouraged but not required.
