With spacious doubles and adjustable AC, Sulz Hall is a great room assignment for incoming freshmen.
Location: Barnard Quad (Barnard 3009)
- Nearby dorms: You can walk between Hewitt, Reid, and Brooks without going outside. Also within a block of the 600s (600, 616, and 620) and Elliot Hall, depending on gate/entrance closures
- Stores and restaurants: Closest Quad building to Hewitt Dining/campus based on walking distance. Immediately off-campus are Hooda Halal, Shake Shack, Pret, Ivy League Stationers, and Morton Williams.
Cost: $13,122 per year and $6,561 per semester for the 2024-2025 academic year. (Cost may be higher for the 2025-26 year).
Amenities:
- Bathrooms: Two bathrooms on each floor, one gender-neutral and one women’s. Bathrooms each have at least three toilet stalls, three shower stalls, and three sinks (sometimes four or five). The two bathrooms are shared by the floor (~40 people), but people who live on the East side of the floor often use Reid bathrooms or walk to Brooks. Bathrooms are rarely crowded; you’ll be able to find at least one open shower on your floor at any given time. Cleaned by facilities.
- AC/Heating: Sulz is famously the only Quad dorm with AC, so consider yourself lucky! AC switches to heat when it gets cold out.
- Kitchen/lounge: One kitchenette and lounge area per floor. Kitchenette includes a stove, oven, sink, and sometimes (but rarely) a fridge. The lounge area usually has one or two tables, chairs, a couch, and a TV that no one knows how to use.
- Laundry: One laundry room per floor which usually has two washing machines and two dryers. Because laundry rooms are shared with the entire floor (including Brooks, Reid, and Hewiit, they can get very busy. Eighth floor residents get more machines which are shared with Sulz Tower residents (roughly 60 extra people).
- Intra-transportation: Staircase and two elevators for Sulz Hall (the other two elevators in the lobby are for Sulz Tower, floors 9–17).
- Hardwood/Carpet: Linoleum or hardwood floors (except the quad room, which has carpet).
Room variety:
- Almost entirely doubles. There are three triples and one quad dorm per floor, as well as one single for the RA.
Bwog recommendation:
Sulz is generally considered the best first-year dorm option. This is mostly due to its coveted AC, but most doubles are also slightly larger than those in the other three buildings. Depending on your room placement, you’ll get a nice view of the courtyard or Broadway, although there’s also a chance you’ll be directly facing the brick wall of Barnard Hall. There’s no higher or lower chance of mice or bugs than any other building, and the hallways are better lit than most other Quad buildings. I would say the biggest downside of the Quad in general (non-Sulz specific) is the chaos that is doing laundry. Best of luck to anyone trying to fight for a machine between 10 am and 5 pm on the weekends.
Resident opinions:
- “Very pretty view of the courtyard.”
- “The AC is a lifesaver in early fall.”
- “The kitchen is nice; it’s a bit of a walk for me because I live at the end of the hallway. It’s definitely worth investing in a mini fridge if you know you’ll want to keep food or drinks cold!”
