Support independent bookstores!
Happening Off-Campus: After spending nearly 10 months in exile, María Corina Machado returns home to Venezuela to push for fair elections. The leader of Venezuela’s resistance for the past three years left her country to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Ms. Machado has criticized the Trump administration following their capture of Nicolás Maduro in January and subsequent elevation of Delcy Rodríguez to the presidency. Ms. Machado’s party shared photos of her in a Venezuelan church on Sunday. According to her aide, Ms. Machado returns to support the transition to a “free, fair, and verifiable presidential elections, with guarantees for all.” (New York Times)
Happening Near Campus: Barnes & Noble plans to open a new location in the East Village next month across the street from The Rabbit Books and Bar, an independent bookstore. In a neighborhood that prides itself on local businesses, owner Marianna Vaidman Stone is optimistic about The Rabbit’s new neighbor, “hoping it will be a multiplier effect.” Other independent bookstore owners pointed to Amazon as a common enemy, eclipsing the threat of chains like Barnes & Noble. Only time will tell what the effects of this new store will have on smaller shops in the East Village. (Gothamist)
Happening On-Campus: Join the Program on U.S.-Russia Relations for a conversation with Tanya Kotelnykova and Nina Shahverdyan, sharing their stories of displacement from Ukraine and Nagorno-Karabakh, respectively, and their pursuits of justice in the aftermath. The discussion aims to answer questions such as “How do you rebuild your life when war has shattered your sense of home and security?” and “What does justice mean when you have experienced its absence firsthand?” The event is on Tuesday from 2 to 3 pm and registration is required by 4 pm today.
