Happening in the World: Yesterday, thieves stole priceless Saxon jewels and artifacts from the Grünes Gewölbe, or “Green Vault,” state museum in Dresden, Germany. The heist was committed by two people, who speedily used an ax to target three glass displays and made off with incredibly valuable and culturally significant items. (NPR)

Happening in the US: After spending 36 years in a Maryland prison for a false conviction, Alfred Chestnut, Andrew Stewart and Ransom Watkins were freed yesterday, thanks to their case being reopened this year. They had originally been convicted when they were teenagers for the death of a Baltimore public school student, but their case was handled with “police and prosecutorial misconduct.” (BBC)

Happening in NYC: The US Cost Guard pulled 23 of the 32 ferries run by New York Waterway, the main operator running between NYC and New Jersey, for safety concerns, causing significant delays for commuters. After repairs, the ferries are slowly being cleared to hold passengers again, but there are still significant delays. (NYT)

Happening on Campus: Today, Professor Nicholas Buccola will give a lecture on the 1965 televised debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley Jr, focusing on its relevance to the racial divide that persists the US. The lecture will run from 1:10 – 2:25 pm in 301 Pupin Hall.
