Let me outtttttttttt.
Name, School, Major, Hometown: SGC, ‘Nard, Political Science-Human Rights and Art History (jeez), Long Beach, NY.
Claim to fame: Probably Publishing this damn publication. Other exciting things: being 5’10”, Barnard Admissions xoxo, @sophsnapspics, taking the PresBo class, drinking Earl Grey, Biscotti walking, working on a boat once, making AXO PC ’25, knowing too much about the Pergamon Altar.
Where are you going? New York or nowhere, baby. My go-to line throughout college was that I’m allegedly pre-law. Still am, according to my post-grad job. DP!
What are three things you learned at Columbia and would like to share with the Class of 2029?
I’m making this five because you cannot stop me.
- Go to therapy. For the love of GOD, go to therapy. Furman is free, SSRIs are life-changing. You are not any less of an Ivy Leaguer for being medicated. We were all the big fish in the small pond, and now we are all here. Transitions are hard but you will be okay!
- Your first year will be awful and terrible. Do not worry! Your freshman year friend group will fall apart, and you will grow and thrive without them.
- On that note, finding community here is a four year experience. I am honored to meet new beautiful and kind people every day. Would highly recommend joining low barrier clubs to find community, then reaching for the higher barrier ones. Find a dog to dogsit! Reach out to pals of pals!
- Date off campus.
- To achieve your best self, sometimes you have to have a dark night of the soul moment. Lose your sanity, burn bridges, watch the raccoons sniff through the garbage in Riverside, scream and laugh and dance with your friends. You can survive being misunderstood. You can! In the end, do good and be good, leave the world better than you found it.
“Back in my day…” Nobody liked Hewitt. Now all the 6’4″ and above athletes take all the burgers. I stop eating on campus for a year and suddenly every CC person I know is at Hewitt every day?
Favorite Columbia lore? RA Mary. Miss you come home the kids miss you. Also the gates were once open and this school didn’t suppress free speech.
What was your favorite class at Columbia? Oh god, how can I even pick. Any class with these profs: Glenn Mitoma (please notice me), Rosalyn Deutsche, Greg Bryda, Alexander Alberro, Francisco DeAngelis, PresBo, Michael Gerrard, J.C Salyer, Paula Franceze, Alexander Cooley, Oliver McClellan, the entire Barnard Art History Department.
Classes: ANYTHING WITH GLENN MITOMA, Freedom of Speech and Press, Rome Beyond Rome, 20th Cen Art, ANYTHING WITH GLENN MITOMA.
Whom would you like to thank? OWM, Beatrice, RA Mary, Caro my Child, my children Mia, Liv, Rory, Jaci, and Haile, my grandchildren, my great-grandchildren, the entire Barnard Art History Department, AXO, Bwog Fall 2022 onward, and Spoon. And Professor Bryda for giving me an A on my thesis.
One thing to do before graduating? Move off campus. Maybe get a cat?
Any regrets? Honestly, not sticking up for myself more. Be psycho to the extent that you are willing to be labelled psycho. All of this is a little fake and gay.
