Battling against the windy weathers with Lizzy McAlpine’s latest release.
Happening off-Campus: A federal court blocked Texas from using a redrawn US House map on Tuesday that touched off a nationwide redistricting battle. This battle is a large piece of President Trump’s efforts to preserve the small Republican majority ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The map designed to give Republicans five additional House seats was defended by Governor Greg Abbott and other Republicans. In a 2-1 ruling, a panel of federal judges in El Paso sided with opponents who agreed that the map’s redrawing of congressional districts would harm Black and Hispanic residents. The decision was authored by US District Judge Jeffrey V Brown, who was nominated by Trump during his first term. (AP News)
Happening near Campus: According to court records, two-thirds of families, most of whom were formerly homeless, living in a Queens housing complex have been served with eviction papers in the last two years. The high rate of eviction filings in a single housing building is raising red flags among tenant advocates who say the city is not doing its part to ensure that vulnerable New Yorkers remain housed. At the building in question, there have been 60 eviction cases since July 2023, and in more than a dozen of those cases, tenants were sued a second time after settling the initial case for overdue rent. The Department of Social Services is building a system to track eviction warrants and identify at-risk tenants and is considering tightening its contracts to make eviction a last resort. (Gothamist)
Happening on Campus: Tonight, the Hispanic Institute is screening the documentary La Salsa Vive (2025), which will be followed by a Q&A with director Juan Carvajal, co-producer Juan Velásquez, and musician Henry Fiol. The documentary is an exploration tracing the roots of salsa from New York to Cali, Colombia. La Salsa Vive offers an invaluable visual and narrative exploration of how music serves as a unifying force and a form of cultural expression across borders. The event is from 6:30 to 8 pm in 405 Milbank Hall. Registration is required for non-Columbia ID holders. For more information, click here.
