Spirit Airlines shut down, transportation funding, and finals week!
Happening Off Campus: Spirit Airlines recently announced on May 2 that it had ceased all operations due to mounting debt and financial difficulties. A rise in fuel prices also affected its decision. All flights have been cancelled, and the airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. (USA Today)
Happening Near Campus: New York officials are allegedly suing the Trump administration for withholding $73 million in transportation funding. The Department of Transportation is withholding the money as a retaliation against the issuing of licenses and permits to noncitizens or illegal immigrants. According to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration audit, more than half of New York’s commercial licenses were issued in violation of the law. The funds would be used for highway and road construction, and revoking licenses could lead to a disruption in the public transportation industries and a shortage of bus drivers. (Gothamist)
