Columbia is no stranger to cool and alternative web shows and radio stations that make us wish we were as angsty and hip as the hosts. Swimming—better yet, doggy paddling?—in the pool of Internet broadcast, Amelia Arnold and Lauren Beltrone, BC ’16 and BC ’17 respectively, have started their own podcast titled “I’m Too Skinny and Too Many Boys Like Me.” SoundCloud Sweetheart Courtney Couillard caught up with the ladies about what inspired them to create the show and more on their genius creativity.
Bwog: How did you both meet? Any good NSOP awkward stories?
AA: We met in the Sulz 6 gender-inclusive bathroom. I was showering in the handicap stall, playing “Mariner’s Revenge Song” by the Decemberists and Lauren started belligerently singing along. Our friendship bloomed from there.
Bwog: What made you ladies want to start a podcast?
LB: We both have weird, distinctive voices and relatively weird faces. And we had shit to say, so we decided on a podcast as our artistic medium.
Bwog: What extensive thought process went behind coming up with the name “I’m Too Skinny and Too Many Boys Like Me”?
AA: Michaela Fischer.
LB: Yeah, so our friend and producer of the show, Michaela, was the first one to come up with the name. It comes from the problem that a lot of Barnard students have to endure: having too many opportunities, in all facets of life.
Bwog: What is the process like for you guys to record a show? Also, why did you decide to create this independent rather than approaching WBAR?
AA: It’s a very simple process actually. We just sit down on my shitty Ikea carpet and record on Lauren’s iPhone. Actually we recorded the first few using IMATs equipment, but then we kept losing cables and getting fined, so we regressed. We talk for like, 40 minutes, and then mix it in Garageband.
LB: We first wanted to do it as a WBAR show, but we also wanted to have to the flexibility to interview people whenever and to not have to wake up at 4am. We worship WBAR from afar, but realize how easy it is to do our own thing.
Bwog: Please discuss Becca Barnard. What is her tragic flaw? What Hewitt cookie is her favorite?
AA: Becca Barnard is the central nervous system of this institution. Becca’s soul permeates Lehman lawn and Liz’s Place. Becca is the epitome bold and beautiful. She has a signed copy of “Lean In” on her shelf. Oh and oatmeal raisin, definitely.
LB: Yeah, we just wanted to create this character that represents a little bit of every Barnard student. And then hyperbolize it to a point of absurdity. I’d say Becca’s flaw is that she always bites off more than she can chew…
Bwog: What is your ultimate goal with the show? Internet fame? Free trips to Coachella?
AA: We have no ultimate goal. It just seemed like the right thing to do as occasionally bored college students who fancy themselves as funny.
LB: Coachella would be nice.
Bwog: Have you invited DSpar to be a guest on the show?
LB: We haven’t invited DSpar to be a guest yet, but it’s definitely in the cards.
