Despair: The second general election in Turkey this year saw Recep Erdogan’s Justice and Development party win 49.4% of the vote. Although Erdogan claims the vote to be fair, many critics believe that the election was “characterised by unfairness and, to a serious degree, fear.” (BBC)

Celebration: Australia’s most prestigious horse race, the Melbourne Cup AKA “the race that stops a nation,” was won by a female jockey for the first time. Michelle Payne, who rode on her horse Prince of Penzance, dedicated her win to female athletes everywhere. (BBC)

Despair: An official from Metrojet, the Russian airline whose plane crashed in the Sinai on Saturday, ruled out pilot error and technical failure as possible causes of the crash. An external impact, however, may be responsible. (NYT)

Celebration: If you didn’t watch the World Series and your Mets-loving friends haven’t told you yet, the New York Mets lost to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. To celebrate, Kansas City threw a pretty lit parade with over 500,000 people. Wow. (Kansas City Star)
