Happy Wednesday! Bwog GSSC Bureau Chiefs Jenny Nugent & Romane Thomas have the highlights on last night’s General Studies Student Council meeting.

GSSC had a particularly productive meeting last night! Attendance was on point, and the VPs were all ready with updates.

President Julian LaRosa started by announcing that GS was able to raise $212,949 on Giving Day. The money will fund student scholarships as well as 10 gala tickets, which will be made available for free via raffle. Additionally, Julian announced that after reading Bwog’s article on last week’s meeting (you’re welcome), he decided to instate a pledge of loyalty to himself (pending penning) to ensure that his staff remains in line.

After a brief musical break celebrating two recent birthdays, the council worked on the following points:

  • GSSC quickly passed a motion to approve an additional $1,000 for the food bank.
  • The policy team is hard at work rewriting the constitution’s bylaws. The goals are to reflect the reality of GSSC and to clarify points that have traditionally been sources of confusion. A subcommittee is being set up to discuss these issues so that action can be taken in the Spring semester.
  • The GSSC Finance team has rewritten the rules and regulations for the process of seeking a GSSC co-sponsorship. Primarily, their goal was to clarify the process by directing students to other sources of funding and by making the explanations of budgetary details more clear to the council. After some heated discussion, GSSC decided to go back to the drawing board to edit the wording. The council wants to ensure that any rules they put into place will genuinely help facilitate student activities instead of blocking funding for valuable projects.
  • Prepare yourselves – the new website is actually arriving! The website will feature social media integration, up-to-date information on events, polls for GS students to engage with council, and a full page of adorable cats to ease the agony of midterms.
  • At this point, GSSC was fairly behind schedule, so Brett Krasner came in like a champion, giving updates on almost 10 events in as many minutes. In collaboration with other schools, GSSC will be preparing for Glass House Rocks next semester, the Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 1st, and this Thursday’s basketball mania. GS-specific events include study-buddy sign-ups, a Thanksgiving celebration for people who cannot make it home, a bone marrow swab drive, and an event on navigating the job search for international students.
  • Finally, Mike Higgins took a look at last year’s GS survey results and highlighted areas which need improvement or special attention. While the overall student population thinks that GSSC is doing a good job, the council is improving itself to ensure that students are aware of all of the resources they provide.
