Since college students are categorically denied doggos on campus, I’ve found that the best place to get back in touch with the canine community is at Riverside Park. This weekend I profiled five of the best woofers — enjoy!
Meet Gus! He’s an 18 week-old German wirehaired pointer. His owner Alejandro knew he wanted this particular breed after years of visiting his uncle’s German wirehaired pointer in Spain. According to Alejandro, Gus “can go from an energy level of zero to ten just on a dime and back down.” “Is he a good boy?” I asked Alejandro, and he replied, “He’s a great boy.”
Here is Cooper, a two year-old Black Labrador, presumably mixed with another breed on account of his “long legs,” as his owner Susan notes. Cooper loves to poop in the middle of the street and sit in all the puddles he finds on his walks. Susan points to a particular spot in the park, labeling it as his favorite place to get wet. “He’ll just jet through it and water will come flying up,” she said. Cooper is also a “good boy,” according to Susan.
This little guy’s full name is Hudson D. Frenly-Dog, and he’s a 16-week old shih-tzu terrier “with something else going on,” his owner Andy said. Hudson was adopted from Los Angeles and made his way to New York with Andy early in the spring. They have a lot in common according to Andy: both were born to “single hard-working mom” and “didn’t know their dad.” Hudson’s got a “serious prance” when he runs after his ball, and “the taller the grass the higher he’ll leap.”
“I know everybody says this,” Andy said. “But he’s the best boy.”
Andy is Hudson’s social media director on his Instagram page: @hudsons_human.
This is Jeter, a nine month-old cockapoo named after the famous baseball player. Sarah, his owner is convinced he understands most of what people say by the way he cocks his head when he listens. “He’s incredibly affectionate,” Sarah said. “He will sit in your lap for hours.”
I ask if he’s a good boy to which she answers, “He’s a real good boy.”
If you spent your childhood watching Beethoven like I did you know this dog — Gordie — is a bonafide St. Bernard (albeit a small one since he’s only four months-old). Gordie’s owner Jon said his family “all disagreed on breeds” until they met another St. Bernard puppy at one of his son’s baseball games. “From that point we were unanimous,” Jon said. Contrary to any first impression you might have of Gordie when he’s near the dog park, Jon says he’s “the laziest dog he’s ever seen.”
“Getting him out of the house, down the street, is a real challenge,” Jon said. But, he’s a “very good boy.”
