Happening in the World: Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, presented the awards to public officials that help advance gender equality at the Gender Balance Index 2018. Men won these awards in all three categories that he presented. The awards include Best Personality for Supporting Gender Balance, Best Federal Entity for Supporting Gender Balance, and the Best Initiative for Supporting Gender Balance. (CNN)
Happening in the US: President Trump is set to deliver his State of the Union address on February 5, after having been postponed due to the 35-day government shutdown. President Trump was originally scheduled to deliver his address last Tuesday, but Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi revoked his invitation to speak on the House floor following President Trump’s grounding Speaker Pelosi’s plane that was supposed to take her to Afghanistan. Speaker Pelosi extended the new invitation to President Trump yesterday afternoon. (The New York Times)
Happening in NYC: Marites Fortaliza was stuck in the elevator between the second and third floors of the townhouse in which the family she worked for lived. The 53-year-old woman works as a nanny for the Stephens family. Warren Stephens is a billionaire investment banker. Maritza told police that she had been stuck in the elevator for about three days while the family was out of town. She was found dehydrated but in stable condition and was transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center. (NBC News)
