Bwoglines: Jazz Edition

The day before break—time for Bwoglines.

Happening in the World: 49 people died yesterday in shootings at two New Zealand mosques. Police have apprehended a suspect.

Happening in the US: The Senate voted 59-41 yesterday to block Trump’s national “emergency.”

Happening in NYC: Not news, but an article about a picture taken in 1953 of Thelonious Monk, Roy Haynes, Charles Mingus, and Charlie Parker performing together downtown.

Happening on Campus: John Coatsworth, Provost of Columbia University, will step down on June 30, 2019.

Song Rec: “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” By Charles Mingus

Speaking of Mingus, here’s one of his best and most well-known songs. It’s a tribute to the great jazz saxophonist Lester Young, who often wore a pork pie hat. Stylish.

You should also listen to Jeff Beck’s and Joni Mitchell’s covers.
