No longer plagued by its fire-ridden past and only hindered by its lack of AC, Ruggles is having quite the moment.

Location: 508 West 114th Street

  • Nearby dorms: John Jay is right across the street, all the 114th street brownstones, Broadway and Carman
  • Stores and restaurants: Strokos, NY Basics, Insomnia Cookies, Thai Market, Sweetgreen

Cost: All upperclassman housing at Columbia costs $9,538.

Amenities:

  • Bathrooms: One in each 4-person suite, and two in each 8-person suite.
  • AC/Heating: There’s unfortunately no AC, but there’s centrally-controlled heating!
  • Kitchen: One per suite. It’s not huge, but does have a full-size refrigerator, stovetop, oven, and counter and cabinet space.
  • Lounge: There’s one TV lounge and study room in the basement.
  • Laundry: One in the basement.
  • Computers/Printing: One in the lobby.
  • Gym: One gym in the basement, with a few ellipticals and treadmills.
  • Intra-transportation: (i.e. elevators): One elevator with moderate speed (think slightly better than John Jay/Hamilton, but only slightly). Also one set of spiraling stairs!
  • Hardwood/Carpet: Hardwood floors in the bedrooms. Linoleum or tile floors in the kitchen, bathroom, and hallways.

Room variety:

  • Each floor has four suites, which can be 4-person, 6-person, or 8-person suites.
  • 82 singles in the building, in total.
    • Singles in 4-person suites range from 107-157 sq. ft.

    • Singles in 8-person suites range from 100-123 sq. ft.
  • 59 doubles.
    • Doubles range from 172-200 sq. ft. There are only doubles in 4 or 6-person suites.

Numbers:

  • 4-person suite: the final such suite went to 30/2470 last year. Rising seniors are the only ones with a chance.
  • 6-person suite: 21.6667/1578.
  • 8-person suite: 20/2990
  • 2 in 4-person suite with RA: 20/816.

Bwog recommendation:

Ruggles is an incredibly nice, apartment-style dorm. The kitchen, though small, is plenty of space to function, and has pretty modern-looking stovetops. While inter-suite bonding is pretty much non-existent, suites themselves have just enough space to hold parties. The location is also prime, being right across from John Jay, and JJ’s will never be far from reach.

Resident opinions:

It’s suite style! The 8-persons have decent sized living rooms, the 4-persons have big kitchens but no living room (but the rooms are really big).

The basement gym is really nice, and has the best location in my opinion.

Some cons are there is no AC and bad heating. It’s very antisocial between suites, so if you don’t already know people, it’s almost impossible to make new friends, because there are no common areas on the floors.
