New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art, but sometimes it’s difficult to break the Morningside-bubble and experience it all first-hand. “Where Art Thou” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/theatrically-inclined on campus.
On Campus:
- This Thursday, April 4 at 7 PM, join KCST and the Center for American Studies for Shakespeare in Translation? With a conversation between professors James Shapiro and John McWhorter, and performances from KCST actors, this event will explore the virtues and drawbacks of adapting Shakespeare into modern English.
- The CU Players’ One Acts Festival is going up this weekend, 8 PM on Thursday through Friday. The CU Players will perform 4 one-act plays by names such as Anton Chekhov and Kurt Vonnegut. Grab your $5.50 student tickets.
- This Friday at 8 and 10:30 PM is Orchesis’ Spring 2019 performance, “Bears. Beets. Battlestar GalactOrchesis: A Sitcom-Themed Dance Show.” Featuring all your favorite student dancers, student choreographers, and sitcom theme songs. Tickets $6.50 with CUID.
- Join New Opera Workshop this Friday and Saturday in the GMT for Mozart’s famous opera, The Magic Flute. Performances will be in German with English supertitles. Tickets $4.50 with CUID.
Off Campus:
- Ever wanted to hear a literary reading in a Soviet-themed bar? Well, now you can: This Thursday at 7 PM, the KGB Bar on 85 E. 4th St. is hosting this month’s Columbia Selects reading. It will feature work by graduates of the Columbia MFA Writing Program.
- Join the CU Orchestra this Sunday (or next Tuesday) for its Spring 2019 Concert at Symphony Space. Featuring works by Mozart, Dvořák and Prokofiev, the free concert will showcase talent in student-performed classical music.
