Happening in the World: The Brazilian Institute of environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) is currently searching for the source of a major oil spill that currently spans over 1,500 kilometers in the country. Although fish and shellfish appear to be unharmed but the spill, at least six turtles have died so far. Two turtles were found and rescued by beachgoers and another was moved to a rehabilitation center. (BBC)
Happening in the US: While we are still enjoying the beautiful summer weather here in New York City, it seems winter has come early in Montana. Last Saturday a storm began that has brought over two feet of snow to areas of Montana. September snowfall records are being broken as Montanans hunker down to wait out the unprecedented storm. Happening in NYC: This week the New York City Commission on Human Rights declared it illegal to threaten others with calling ICE as it is a discriminatory action. The phrases “illegal alien” and “go back to your country” have also been banned as derogatory terms. In the city’s words, “hate has no place here.” (Washington Examiner)
Happening on Campus: October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month and, starting on October first, Lerner will be lit up with purple lights to honor victims of relationship violence. To kick off the month there will be a Turn Up the Volume Block Party on Monday in Lerner 555 at 6:30 pm to lift up and celebrate communities who have been silenced when it comes to sexual and gender-based violence.
A Dog I Saw On Campus This Week: This week I was honored to have met Murphy, an eleven year old Maltipoo, at a therapy dog event on campus. She loves attention and being pet by people and she licked my hand!!! I can definitively say Murphy is the best thing to have ever happened to this world.
