On this day we celebrate Netflix, uninterested lions, and another false start for anti-art market tradition.
Happening in the World: A Banksy showroom mysteriously appeared in London, displaying several trademark stencil prints, replicas of Stormzy’s stab-proof vest at Glastonbury, and an inscribed gravestone bearing: “You have now reached your destination.” The artist also announced Gross Domestic Product, his new merchandise brand created in response to a greeting card company trying to acquire legal custody of his name. He referred to this motivation as “possibly the least poetic reason to ever make some art”. (Guardian)
Happening in the US: After an undeniably rough few months from declines in subscriptions, Netflix officially confirmed Stranger Things 4, the renewal of the streaming service’s most-watched original series. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer reportedly signed a nine-figure multiyear film and TV deal. No release date for Season 4 has been given, so don’t start planning your binge-watch party just yet. (CNN)
Happening in NYC: A woman at the Bronx Zoo displayed more Columbia spirit than we ever could aspire to by climbing into the African lion exhibit. An Instagram video shows the woman dancing in front of the lion until it eventually roared in agitation. No injuries were reported. (NBC)
Happening on Campus: Interested in learning more about filmmaking, LGBTQ in Arabic communities, and fostering creativity in general? Head up to Manhattanville to hear five Arab LGBTQ filmmakers discuss their personal experiences in filmmaking, as well as the relationship between Arab queer cinema and the sociopolitical climate. “The (R)evolution of Arab Queer Cinema: Queer Representation in Film Pre- and Post-Arab Uprisings” will be held in Lenfest Center for the Arts from 6 – 8 p.m. No registration is required, but you can learn more here.
