Happening in the US: Sandra the orangutan is now legally defined as having “personhood” which grants her certain human rights, like better living conditions. She was previously kept in an Argentinian zoo, but since Judge Elena Liberatori decided that Sandra is a non-human person in 2015, the sweet orangutan has been transferred to her new home: the Center for Great Apes in central Florida. Happening in New York: Nearly 5000 New Yorkers went without heat during the recent cold spell, and the NYCHA website blamed “a broken water main in a boiler room for the disruption.” The outage occurred at the Castle Hill Houses in the Bronx, but heating issues have also been reported by the NYCHA in the Farragut Houses and Stuyvesant Gardens in Brooklyn and the Rangel Houses in Manhattan.
