I don’t even know how 2020 is going to top this.

Happening in the World: A deadly wildfire has sparked in a war zone in Eastern Ukraine, exacerbated by land mines placed during the war. Firefighters cannot reach the wildfire due to the land mines and the war zone status prevents any air fighting. Constant shelling has created a precarious situation for those attempting to flee the fires. The coronavirus pandemic has complicated coordination amongst firefighters as well. (The New York Times)

Happening in the US: Texas closes several mail-in ballot drop-off locations, raising concerns over electoral integrity in the state. Earlier in July, Governor Greg Abbott eased voting restrictions, but internal pressure from fellow Republicans have led him to close the ballot drop-offs that were opened. Civil rights organizations plan to take action against the Governor (The Guardian)

Happening in NYC: Amidst concerns over coronavirus, many traditional Halloween celebrations are being cancelled across New York City. For example, the Village Halloween Parade, a traditional major celebration involving thousands of people, has been cancelled. The CDC has classified trick-or-treating as a high risk activity that should be avoided. Despite this, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has stated that he will not explicitly ban trick-or-treating. (Wall Street Journal)

Happening in Our Community: Columbia’s club fair continues on Sunday night on Lionlink (registration here). Students will have the opportunity to go to a variety of virtual “booths” via Zoom links found on the Events page. The event will run from 10PM to midnight on October 4th.
