Happening in the World: Hurricane Eta reaches Nicaragua, heavily affecting the rural and mountainous regions. These regions were much more difficult for relief efforts to reach, raising concerns over the government’s ability to provide food and water to the remote communities. The hurricane has triggered numerous landslides and caused major flooding, forcing hundreds to evacuate. Hurricane Eta has also destroyed major sources of coffee crop, a primary export. (ABC News)
Happening in the US: Joe Biden wins the popular vote and the Electoral College, thus becoming the president-elect of the United States in the 2020 election. Although there are states yet to be called, Joe Biden has exceeded the 270 threshold needed to become the president-elect. (The Guardian)
Happening in NYC: Restrictions placed internally in NYC regarding the recent uptick in cases has been softened by Governor Cuomo. Certain parts of NYC have reverted to pre-uptick restrictions, but many regions remain under heavier lockdown. New policies where people coming into New York will be required to test negative several days prior to arrival and test negative again 4 days after arrival were placed last week, with those who test positive will be placed under a 14-day mandatory quarantine. Happening in Our Community: Columbia is hosting an event to explore the connection between music and the mind. Explorations of the musical sphere in culture and cognition will be explored by composers and neuroscientists. There will also be a discussion on modern limitations of neuroscience to explain these cultural phenomena and how we can learn from those challenges. (Registration found here)
