Happening in the World: The sudden abandonment of more than 1,700 Cape cormorant chicks off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa has led to the largest seabird rescue mission in 20 years. Robben Island rangers noticed the adult birds had disappeared, leaving the chicks unprotected and at the mercy of larger predators. The Southern African Foundation for the Conversation of Coastal Birds is caring for the chicks until they are ready to be released into the wild (BBC).
Happening in the US: The US Justice Department has dropped a lawsuit accusing Yale University of discriminating against White and Asian applicants. The decision to dismiss the suit is a reversal from the DOJ’s position under the Trump Administration. A spokesperson from the agency stated that it will continue to investigate the school’s admission practices (The Washington Post).
Happening in NYC: New York City’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Dave Chokshi, has tested positive for COVID-19. He announced Tuesday that he is experiencing mild symptoms and had not yet received the vaccine, citing state vaccine eligibility guidelines (NBC New York).
