Happening in the World: The United Kingdom Supreme Court has declared Uber Drivers to be workers, not self employed, meaning that Uber will soon be held to minimum wage and holiday pay standards. This ruling was chosen because the court believes that Uber has a position of power over their workers, who have no way to make more earnings unless they work more hours (BBC).
Happening in the US: 24 Boeing 777 airplanes with Pratt & Whitney 4000 engines have been temporarily removed from United Airlines service following the failure of an engine flying over Denver this past weekend. The remaining Boeing 777 with different engines in United’s fleet are currently in storage. The Federal Aviation Administration plans on making safety checks more thorough for planes with these engines (CNN).
Happening in NYC: The first case in New York State of the B.1.351 variant of COVID-19, first found in South Africa, has been confirmed in a Long Island resident from Nassau County. This variant has concerned researchers because current vaccines are not as effective in protecting against it, although findings are still showing it is somewhat effective against infections in vaccine trials (Gothamist).
Happening in our Community: Thursday, February 25th is the last day to register for housing for the 2021-2022 school year. Applications for housing are pushing forward as though next year will be in person, although all registration and selection will be done virtually.
