Cuomo continues to ignore his series of scandals to tell us indoor fitness classes are back!

Happening in the world: The president of Tanzania, John Magufuli, died from heart complications yesterday, reported the vice-president. Magufuli, a well-known skeptic of the reality of COVID-19, had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, during which time his political opposition suggested he had contracted COVID-19. Any broader cause of death remains unconfirmed. (BBC)

Happening in the US: The stimulus package signed into law last week is set to give over $31 billion to Native communities via tribal governments and other government programs dedicated to Native populations. The pandemic has disproportionately impacted Native communities, with billions of dollars of this aid set to go to healthcare services. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: Next Monday, indoor fitness classes will return to NYC at 1/3 capacity, Governor Cuomo announced, the first time such classes will be allowed since March 2020. The move was celebrated by local gym owners, who have been able to reopen for solo exercising since September but have continued to struggle during the pandemic. (Gothamist)

Happening in our community: Today at 1 pm, The Domestic Gaze, an original podcast hosted by the Columbia Global Center in Paris, will be doing a special episode on the “disproportionate impact the devastating effects of COVID-19 have on those who identify as women.” The discussion will feature faculty from Columbia Law, the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, and Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
