Happening in the World: The US, UK, and Australia have entered into a security pact (known as Aukus) that will allow Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines. The pact will also cover artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, as part of a growing effort to counter China’s increasing military power. The pact is also said to “promote stability in the Indo-Pacific,” according to a joint statement from the three countries (BBC).
Happening in the US: The US Soccer Federation has offered identical contracts to both the men’s and women’s soccer teams, aiming to align the two teams “under a single collective bargaining agreement structure.” The announcement comes after members of the women’s team reached a settlement in December 2020 with US Soccer that revised policies surrounding working conditions (CBS).
Happening in NYC: Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed that she will move forward with the eastern High Line expansion originally proposed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The expansion will bring the High Line within a block of Moynihan Train Hall and is expected to be completed in spring 2023. However, Governor Hochul gave no indication whether there will be a northward extension of the High Line like former Governor Cuomo had initially proposed (Gothamist).
