This week’s meeting was chock-full of information about last week’s meeting with the Deans, Grad Strike support, upcoming events, and GSSC swag.

Student Body President, Serengeti Timungwa (GS ’22), kicked off the meeting hot with notes from GSSC’s meeting with Dean Rosner and Dean Rosen-Metsch this past week. They had planned to continue discussing COVID-19 accommodations in classes, criticize the lack of clarity around the rollout of indoor dining, and the plan regarding make-up graduation ceremonies affected by the pandemic. Both deans gave the usual, lackluster response that COVID-19 accommodations are up to the student to communicate with their professor or, if need be, Class Dean about. Timungwa expressed frustration that this responsibility continues to fall on students’ shoulders when a systemic solution is needed. Additionally, when asked about the indoor dining rollout and future plans of graduations, they passed the responsibility onto the university, stating that both issues are out of their hands. GSSC plans to meet with Dean Rosner in the coming weeks to discuss further.

VP of Policy, Kambi Gathesha (GS’ 23), also mentioned this future meeting. The Policy Committee also plans to meet with Strike leaders to discuss how GS undergrads can best support them. They hope to craft a letter supporting the strike based on what they learn in this meeting.

Next, Vice President of Communications, Brian Laurito (GS’ 22), encouraged GS students to enter the Milvets/GSSC Virtual Halloween Contest on their Instagram. Post a photo wearing your best Halloween costume by the end of today with #gsscmilvetsmixer2021 in the picture and caption for a chance to win a $30 gift card for the Columbia bookstore. Since this is last minute, perhaps you could fall back on the classic costume, statues of Columbia?

Vice President of Campus Life, Cole Wagner (GS ’22), thanked GSSC members for their help so far with Snack Attacks. It’s been so successful, GSSC had to buy double the quantity of food expected. Even with the extra food, they were out of Shake Shack in just ten minutes! GSSC’s next event is the Milvets/GSSC Halloween Mixer on Thursday, October 28. There are only a few tickets left, so act fast!

There were three proposals at the end of the meeting, all of which passed.

Community Service & Sustainability Representative, Faith Grady (GS ’24), presented a beautiful presentation, eliciting much praise in the chat, asking GSSC to allocate $2,300 for GSSC merch. She noted that swag is the only way GSSC members get paid, so it’s important to make it good.

Next, Timugwa asked GSSC to allocate $350 for GS students participating in SGA’s Binder Giveaway. SGA’s Binder Giveaway interest form is open to undergraduates from any CU school.

Finally, International Students Representative, Carol Chen (GS ’23), pitched a new event for GS, “Eat Around the World,” and asked for a $1700 allocation. The event intends to bring together international students by mixing and mingling around Hawaiian, Chinese, Indian, and Italian foods.

GSSC will not meet next week but plans to return to in-person meetings starting November 9! They plan to still offer Zoom for those who’d prefer. Next meeting, they’ll discuss their meeting with Dean Rosner and hopefully discuss their letter of support for the Grad Strike.
