News Editor Victoria Borlando is back to discuss the only three things she talks about on this website: News, Culture, and BwogLetter, Columbia’s prettiest, wittiest, and most efficient weekly newsletter.
Do not get it twisted: there are movies made in the 90s, and then there are 90s movies. The first kind of movie is purely within a historical context; some are classic, others were already remade ten thousand times—they’re just stories that can exist at any time. 90s movies, however, are movies that can only exist in the 90s, containing an aesthetic, acting style, script, and overall feeling that is so distinct that it could not be replicated in any other space or time. Also, everyone in the movie is extremely hot. It is very important to know that in a 90s movie, everyone is very hot. Great examples of 90s movies include: Romeo + Juliet, Titanic, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Practical Magic, Clueless, Interview with the Vampire, Great Expectations, Fight Club…the list goes on. These are all iconic films, and they are soooo 90s!
BwogLetter—Bwog’s weekly newsletter that is published every Sunday—is exactly like a 90s movie! In fact, if you subscribe to BwogLetter by either clicking this link or by hitting our “Subscribe” button at the top of our website’s page, guaranteeing that you will receive our first edition of the semester this Sunday, January 23, you will gain the full experience of an iconic 90s movie in about 5 minutes of reading time!
But what specifically is “soooo 90s” about BwogLetter? Well, consider the following:
- We make bold artistic decisions. What was the best part about the 90s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet? Was it the original text complemented by crazy, neon, Venice Beach, quasi-Catholic aesthetics? Alongside other aspects of this flawless movie, the answer is yes! For BwogLetter, each newsletter is uniquely designed according to certain themes, including beautiful fine art, pleasing and eye-catching details, and a sense of refinement found in no other campus newsletter. In other words, we have the impressive visuals every 90s movie required back in the real Golden Age of cinema.
- We tell absolutely absurd stories. After watching Interview with the Vampire, you might have experienced the feeling of whiplash between the New Orleans phase, the Paris phase, and the modern-day phase. You might have left the movie with the question: “What the fuck did I just watch, and why was it the best experience I’ve ever had?” Well, BwogLetter (subscribe here) is the exact way! With the dramatic tales, epic sagas of lost and found loves, and both subtle and overt gay themes in Bwog’s regular content, our weekly newsletter compiles them all into a neat, easy-to-read anthology for you, the reader, to enjoy at your own disposal! We organize it all for you, shaping a week’s worth of riveting content into one, interesting story.
- Everyone involved is hot. Did I mention that in order to be considered a “90s movie” as opposed to a movie “made in the 90s” everyone has to be inexplicably hot? Well, watch The Talented Mr. Ripley (or pretty much any other 90s movie referenced here) and you’ll understand my point. Bwog goes by the same logic! If you write for Bwog, or if you design the weekly editions of BwogLetter, then you’re automatically hot! Even the readers of Bwog and BwogLetter are hot! And that’s a major plus, because attractive people make every experience much more enjoyable.
I don’t want to keep you: you have a whole list of movie recommendations to get through before we meet again, which will be this Sunday, January 23, when the first BwogLetter of the semester will be released. I hope to see you there! Sign up for BwogLetter here, and have a lovely first week of school.
