I don’t know what Boxing Day really means, and most people don’t know what FDOC means, but we all understand the term Bwoglines!

Editor’s Warning: Death

Happening in the World: Tonga’s government released its first update since a volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami hit the country last week. Aid has been limited due to lingering ash from the volcano that continues to fall and cover the territory. So far, three deaths have been confirmed, but with a submarine communication cable severed, communication with the nation and its residents has been scant. (BBC)

Happening in the US: A judge has approved a deal to restructure Puerto Rico’s debt and pull it out of official bankruptcy, one declared in 2017 and the first of its kind in US territories or states. Reception to the deal is mixed, with Puerto Rico’s governor praising the move but many skeptical of the unelected board that has overseen the territory’s finances since 2016 and the ability for the deal to truly, not just officially, pull Puerto Rico out of its bankruptcy. Happening in NYC: On Sunday, hundreds attended the public funeral for fifteen of those killed in the Bronx apartment building fire that occurred earlier in January. During the service, many speakers, including Mayor Eric Adams, acknowledged the inequities that led to the building being at higher risk for such a tragedy and pushed for change. Several relief funds have been established for those affected, which can be found in the source article. (Gothamist)

Happening in Our Community: Today at 6 pm on Zoom, the 13/13 Seminar Series is hosting a talk with Professor Kendall Thomas and Bernard E. Harcourt on Stuart Hall, Manning Marable, and Critical Race Theory, centered on texts from Hall and Marable. Learn more here.

How to celebrate FDOC Boxing Day: Even though you just got here, it’s probably a good idea to do a load of laundry. Get in the habit of it! It’s easier the more frequently you do it and the less you have. If you live in my dorm, however, don’t do your laundry today. It’s my turn.
