Yep. There are still bad things happening in Ukraine.

Happening in the World: The US has sent 90 tons of “lethal aid” to Ukraine in the midst of continued Russian military buildup at the border. The aid, which consists partially of ammunition for front-line defenders, is part of a broader $200 million package approved by Joe Biden in December. Russian officials have continued to deny that they have any plans to invade or attack Ukraine. (BBC)

Happening in the US: Last night, two NYPD officers were shot at while responding to a domestic violence call on West 135th street by Lennox Avenue. One officer, Jason Rivera, 22, was killed. The other, Wilbert Mora, 27, is currently in critical condition at Harlem Hospital. The gunman was shot in the arm by a third officer and is also in critical condition. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: The NYC public school system is facing backlash from teachers, administrators, and families over their administration “learning loss” tests. The tests, which were designed to assess how much material students have missed throughout the pandemic and the mix of online and in-person school, have been criticized as age-inappropriate and redundant. Preliminary data does show that learning progress in math and reading has been much slower than expected. (Gothamist)
