Happening in the World: On Wednesday, for the first time in forty years, the United Nations General Assembly convened in an emergency session to vote to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and demanded that Russia remove its military forces. Only five countries voted against the resolution—one of which being Russia—while 35 countries abstained from voting. This action was meant to isolate Russia at the UN but is non-binding. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: The House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol have stated that they have enough evidence to prove that former President Donald Trump and some of his associates may have conspired to commit fraud. In a court filing in a civil case in California, the committee’s lawyers also stated that Trump and his associates may face criminal charges, such as obstructing an official proceeding of Congress and defrauding the American people. Happening in NYC: NYC schools Chancellor David Banks discussed his policy goals for NYC schools for the first time since his appointment by Mayor Eric Adams. Some of his major goals include increasing literacy, eliminating the executive superintendent role to make the Education Department more efficient, and creating a virtual learning option for students who learned best in a virtual space. Happening in Our Community: Poet Fred Moten will be giving a lecture titled “Sovereignty, Soliloquy, and Insovereignty: Lessons from Hank Cinq” tonight in the Sulzberger Parlor of Barnard Hall from 6:15 to 8 pm. The lecture is part of the Such Sweet Thunder series, a yearlong festival consisting of performances, lectures, and events relating to the “tone parallel” between Shakespeare and Such Sweet Thunder, Duke Ellington’s jazz suite inspired by Shakespeare.
