We’ve been lied to and of course it’s an American “explorer’s” fault.

Happening in the World: Apparently, we have been calling the iconic Peruvian archeological site, Machu Picchu, by the wrong name. Documents dating back to 1588 actually describe the region as Huayna Picchu. The mix up seemingly stemmed from an interaction between American explorer, Hiram Bingham, and a guide who misrepresented its name. There are currently no plans in the works to change back the name of the destination. (NPR)

Happening in the US: This Friday, a US judge has refused to throw out Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking conviction, despire a juror’s failure to disclose that he’d been a victim of child sexual abuse during the jury-selection process. The juror claimed to have “skimmed way too fast” through the questionnaire and did not intend to misrepresent themselves. Maxwell remains conviced of sex trafficking and other charges, for her role in helping set up women for abuse by Jeffrey Epstein. (AP)

Happening in NYC: Workers at Amazon’s Staten Island warehouse branch have voted to form the first Amazon Union in US history. The history victory comes as the culmination of two years of fervent organizing, which began with a walkout during the height of NYC’s first pandemic wave. The union is aiming for an increase salaries to $30 an hour, as well as measures to improve the quality of life for workers. (Gothamist)
