Happening in the World: Ukraine is pushing for an international tribunal to hold Russian leaders and soldiers accountable in the wake of Russian occupation of Ukraine. This measure was proposed by European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen, who suggested a specialized court to investigate Russia’s “crime of aggression.” President Zelensky of Ukraine encouraged international leaders to support this measure during his nightly address on Tuesday, as he believes it is the first step in obtaining justice. Establishing the burden of proof for these crimes, however, will be difficult to prove, despite the growing number of Ukrainian citizens executed by Russian soldiers. (BBC)

Happening in the US: In response to the Supreme Court’s overrule of Roe v. Wade, the Senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act, a bipartisan bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage. The bill received 61 votes in favor, 36 against, with 12 Republicans voting in favor. The bill secures same-sex marriage rights in federal law, but does not require that there be a national requirement of same-sex marriage, which is still protected under Obergefell v. Hodges. The bill will be sent back to the House, and Democrats hope to have it signed before Republicans take control of the House in January. (BBC)

Happening in NYC: Brooklyn Representative Hakeem Jeffries will officially be elected House Democratic Leader today, making history as the first African-American to hold the position. In a statement Tuesday, Jeffries referenced policy achievements from his time in office, including the American Rescue Plan and the Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act as proof that Democrats deliver. He said he plans to work collaboratively with Republicans in the House majority, as he believes the midterms were a message from Americans encouraging Congress to work together and stop fighting to score political points.
