Happening in the World: The Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been locked in brutal street combat, badly affecting civilians on the ground. Joe Biden has announced that the US Military has evacuated American diplomats and their families from Khartoum, Sudan. He also confirmed that the embassy in Khartoum is now closed. The UK, Italy, Belgium, Turkey, and the Netherlands are also organizing evacuations. The Khartoum health system is on the brink of failure, as more than 3,500 injured civilians seek help amid crumbling infrastructure and shelled hospitals. (BBC)
Happening in the US: At the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center, Dr. Della Garelle, a veterinarian with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is working to bring endangered species back from the brink of extinction. Working closely with black-footed ferrets, Dr. Della Garelle has cloned a female ferret using DNA from a ferret harvested in the 80s. Her work represents a future for endangered species whose limited gene pool presents a genetic threat to their rehabilitation. (CBS)
Happening in NYC: Mayor Eric Adams has announced new steps the city’s public schools will take to educate students on climate change. The changes, which are part of the city’s broader sustainability plan, will go into effect next year. One of note includes the implementation of a Climate Action Day, where lessons in environmental education and sustainability will be showcased. The education department will also create new career training programs for a “green” economy and increase professional development sustainability training for teachers. (Gothamist)
Happening in our Community: Today, April 23, join experts from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian to learn life-saving skills like hands-on CPR, AED use, and naloxone for opioid overdose. Registration is not required and all participants receive a free CPR Anytime Training Kit and a Certificate of Completion. Infant CPR is being taught from 2:30 to 3 pm, and adult and child CPR from 3:15 to 4 pm.
