Happening in the World: Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old US airman, has been charged with unauthorized removal and transmission of classified information concerning a leak of highly classified military documents about the Ukraine war and other national security issues. He was arrested by the FBI at his family home in rural Massachusetts and is identified as the leader of an online chat group where the documents first emerged. Dozens of leaked documents revealed US assessments of the war in Ukraine and sensitive secrets about American allies, embarrassing Washington and raising fresh questions over the security of classified information. The motive for the leaks is thought to be unusual, and it is unclear what level of security clearance Teixeira had. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Drake Bell, best known for his role in the Nickelodeon show “Drake & Josh,” has been found safe after being reported “missing and endangered” in Florida. Daytona Beach Police Department spokesperson Carrie McCallister confirmed that Bell was in touch with the police officers and was not in danger. Bell, who began acting as a child, was charged with child endangerment in 2021 and pleaded guilty to felony attempted child endangerment and a misdemeanor charge of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles. Happening in NYC: Vice President Kamala Harris is set to give the keynote address at the National Action Network’s annual convention, featuring several speakers from the Biden-Harris administration. The convention is being held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, and Harris is scheduled to speak at noon. The convention’s president, Rev. Al Sharpton, called the vice president’s scheduled remarks a “significant moment in a significant year” as the organization works to advance civil rights and preserve those already won. (Gothamist)
Happening in our community: Today, Friday, April 14, from 12 to 1:30 pm, Columbia Health is hosting an event titled “Disrupting the Culture of Online Sexual Violence .” The talk will cover the increasing abuse targeting male-identifying students and the historically higher rates of harm experienced by female-identifying students. In addition, attendees will learn about new abuse trends, how different genders experience abuse online, and how to be part of the solution. The event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members, and attendees will have a chance to win an Amazon gift card. The talk will be led by Adam Dodge, an internationally recognized digital safety expert. Registration is required via Zoom.
