“She is the mother I never had, she is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don’t know a better person.”

So, I was walking in the rain the other day—it’s been a rainy week, but you all know that. It was gloomy, and a little gray too. But I noticed a beacon of light as I trudged through campus.

That light was not actually light but actually my friend, popstar, and Australian international student Vanessa Amorosi. She didn’t look a day older than when she released her debut album The Power in 2000. It was like she was trapped in time, never aging. Vanessa has a charm that you only get down under. It’s warm, something like the outback sun. She added this yellow tint to the air that surrounded her—a sugary ether.

But she’s more than just where she comes from, she’s a musical genius. And more! See Vanessa—in this universe I am conceptualizing that may or may not have any holding on reality—is a major fan of Bwog. In fact, she’s even considering rushing.

I walked a little faster to catch up with her. She wore an orange jersey and bangs that looked so good they’d surpassed bangdom—reader, it was a boom at that point. While we caught up, we immediately started talking about Bwog. There’s really no other conversation to be had—Bwog is on everybody’s lips.

Despite being the editor-in-chief, I found myself asking her questions about tonight’s open meeting. Like where is it? (Lerner 510, she told me). And when is it? (9 to 10 pm).

Then came the fateful question that changed the trajectory of my Sunday: Who can come to tonight’s meeting?

At this point, in a godly power instantly recognizable from the Roman Catholic upbringing that Vanessa Amorosi and I share. She transcended human power and in a moment only replicable at the closing ceremony of the 2000s Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, she began to tell me.

So who can come to tonight’s meeting? Well, let’s allow Vanessa Amorosi to take it away:

Absolutely everybody

Everybody, everybody

Absolutely everybody

Everybody, everybody

Absolutely everybody

Everybody, everybody

Absolutely everybody

Absolutely everybody

Absolutely everybody

Absolutely everybody

Absolutely everybody

Absolutely everybody

Absolutely everybody

Everybody needs a little Bwogging

Everybody needs somebody thinking of them

Everybody needs a little respect

And whatever it takes, I’m gonna get it (from Bwog)

Everybody needs a hand to hold

Someone to cling to

When the nights are getting cold

I’m no different, I am just the same

Everybody needs a human touch

I can’t live without it

It means too much to me

Everybody needs one true friend

Someone who’ll be there ’til the very end

And absolutely everybody breathes

And everybody, everybody bleeds

We’re no different, we’re all the same
