Happening in the World: Co-founder of the AI project OpenAI Sam Altman was fired on Friday. It is unclear why exactly he was suddenly let go from the company, which created the chatbot ChatGPT, introducing many to AI for the first time. OpenAI’s board said they “lost confidence” in his leadership, and that he was not “consistently candid in his communications.” (BBC)
Happening in the US: Representative George Santos is facing efforts to expel him from Congress after reports were released claiming that he used campaign donations on personal expenses. The Ethics Committee’s report claimed that Santos spent this money on Botox, OnlyFans, and Hermes, among other places. Santos previously pleaded not guilty to charges of laundering campaign funds. The House could vote on the motion to expel Santos as soon as November 28, and they will need a two-thirds majority to succeed. (Reuters)
Happening in NYC: The Transport Workers Union of America has reached a tentative agreement with the MTA, averting a potential strike. According to the union, mechanics, inspectors, cleaners, and cabinet makers have not had a contract since 2019. The retroactive agreement includes a 9.5% pay increase. (Gothamist)
