Ever wondered what someone who got Burlington on their Spotify Wrapped is listening to during finals?
I made a playlist of the music I’ve been listening to during finals, categorized into seven parts. Each has a description of why and where I’ve been listening to it, as well as specific notes on specific songs. Link to the playlist is at the bottom!
Part 1: Saltburn
Do NOT get a new obsession during finals week. I saw this movie over a week ago, yet it refuses to let go of me. Here’s a selection of some of the best songs off the soundtrack. I listen to this most often while walking to class or in the Brooks study lounge.
- Murder On The Dance Floor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor (This will probably be my top song this month)
- Perfect (Exceeder) by Mason, Princess Superstar
- Loneliness – Radiot Cut by Tomcraft
- We Are The People by Empire of the Sun
- Hang Me Up to Dry by Cold War Kids (Haven’t heard this song in years until the movie- new favorite!)
Part 2: Drowning under piles of work
These are songs that are so distorted that it feels like I’m underwater, which simulates exactly how I feel drowning under all my finals! I listen to this when I’m grinding out work in my bedroom on my shag carpet.
- Gamma Ray Blue by The Cleaners From Venus (Just started listening to The Cleaners From Venus and I’m in love)
- Archie, Marry Me by Alvvays
- The Word Hurricane by Air (As an earth science major, I appreciate the brief scientific description of a hurricane thrown in the middle of the song; it’s like another way to study for my Climate Systems final!)
- Sweetest Kill by Broken Social Scene
- Caramel by Connan Mockasin
- Moon Girl by Ha Vay (Nabbed this one off Vivi’s aux)
- Chocolate And Mint by Duster
- Song About me by TV Girl
- Memory Boy by Deerhunter
- Intermission by Strawberry Guy
- CUT by Panchiko
- Cigarettes out the Window by TV Girl
- It Almost Worked by TV Girl (Back on my TV Girl arc, clearly)
Part 3: Back on the farm
This summer I worked on a vegetable farm, and we pretty much only played country and 2010s indie rock the whole summer, as well as the occasional saxophone concerto. I listen to this in Liz’s Place as the sun streams in from the windows.
- Amsterdam by Gregory Alan Isakov
- Nancy From Now On by Father John Misty
- White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes (Been listening to this as long as I can remember, but it’s never gets worn out)
- Janglin by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
- Brother, Do You Know the Road? by Hiss Golden Messenger
- The Sunshine by Manchester Orchestra
- Shake the Frost (Live) by Tyler Childers
- Silver Lining by Mt. Joy
- By and By by Caamp
- Jersey Giant by Evan Honer, Julia DiGrazia
- She Calls Me Back by Noah Kahan (MAD because I did not get Fenway tickets for his tour!)
Part 4: Zach Bryan
Looks like all the country music I listened to this summer indoctrinated me. But I am glad! I also listen to this in Liz’s Place.
- Revival
- Snow
- From Austin
- Nine Ball (My top song of November)
- Boys Of Faith (feat. Bon Iver)
- Sarah’s Place (feat. Noah Kahan)
- Loom
- Me and Mine
- Jamie (feat. Charles Wesley Goodwin)
- Oklahoma Smokeshow
Part 5: I am turning into my mother
My mom loves sending me songs we both love, so these are some of the ones she’s suggested and some I have found on my own. I listen to this while making breakfast in my dorm.
- Silly Love Songs by Wings
- Baby I’m-a Want You by Bread
- How Long by Ace
- Sentimental Lady by Bob Welch
- Let ‘Em In by Wings
- Hey Nineteen by Steely Dan (Steely Dan fan, through and through)
- I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do) by Daryl Hall & John Oates
- Emotion by Samantha Sang, Bee Gees (Emotion you will forever be famous!)
- We’ve Only Just Begun by Carpenters
Part 6: French house
This was because of a daylist Spotify made me based on my obsession with Paradis. They definitely got this one right! I listen to this while putting my makeup on.
- Recto Verso by Paradis
- Hémisphère by Paradis
- La Lune by L’Impératrice
- Cool Cat by Juliette Armanet
- andata – Electric Youth Remix by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Electric Youth (Bigggg Ryuichi Sakamoto fan, and I love the Electric Youth spin)
Part 7: Sufjan Stevens Christmas Album
I listen to this every year! I cannot believe Sufjan Stevens has over 100 Christmas songs. I love every one, but here are some favorites. I listen to this in the Milstein Zine Library.
- O Come O Come Emmanuel
- We’re Goin’ To the Country!
- Angels We Have Heard on High
- Only at Christmas Time
- O Holy Night
