Happening in the US: A Southern California river storm has caused more than 120 mudslides and 25 damaged structures in Los Angeles alone. Millions of residents stayed home on Sunday and Monday, and although officials warned people to stay off the roads, Los Angeles Unified School District remained open. In Northern California, winds reached 90 miles per hour, leading more than 850,000 homes to lose power. (NYTimes)
Happening in NYC: The New York Police Department is bringing back its no beard policy, for aesthetic and safety reasons. According to the Chief of Patrol John Chell, “I think we got a little sloppy.” Religious and medical exemptions will remain, similar to a 2016 relaxation of the rules around beards and turbans to accommodate Sikh officers. The new policy has been criticized by the Police Benevolent Association, who say that this should not be a priority of the department. (Pix 11)
