The dust clouds have descended over another time, this time in Athens.
Happening in the World: An orange haze has descended over Athens as dust clouds have blown in from the Sahara desert. This is not the first time this has happened as similar clouds struck Greece in late March and early April, which covered areas in Switzerland and southern France. Air quality has deteriorated in many parts of the country and the Acropolis was no longer visible because of the dust. Those with respiratory conditions have been urged to limit the time they spend outdoors and wear face masks until the clouds clear. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Former President Donald J. Trump’s Judge in his criminal trial in Manhattan is off to an ominous start when the judge questioned his defense lawyer’s credibility. The prosecution has accused him of orchestrating a criminal conspiracy to influence the 2016 presidential election and his former friend corroborated that accusation. The judge presiding over the case, Juan M. Merchan, is expected to rule soon on a request from prosecutors to hold Trump in contempt of court for attacking witnesses and jurors alike. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: Mayor Adams on Tuesday said outside agitators had infiltrated the protests occurring at Columbia University and NYU, and cited instances of protestors throwing bottles and chairs at NYPD officers the night before. Adams offered no credible proof that any significant number of outsiders had exploited the student-led demonstrations and this claim fits into a long history of public officials blaming outside groups for inciting violence.
