Look out of your big windows onto Broadway while your hair blows cinematically in the AC-generated breeze!

Location: Barnard Quad, 3009 Broadway

Nearby dorms: Reid Hall, Brooks Hall, Hewitt Hall (in the Barnard Quad)

Stores and restaurants: Food trucks, Shake Shack, Pret A Manger, Morton Williams, Sweetgreen, Starbucks (basically all the stores and restaurants on Broadway)

Cost for 2022-2023: $11,738

Amenities: Sulz has easy access to all the amenities on Barnard’s campus. Primary Care Health Services, Furman Counselling, and the Brooks study lounge are all very near. In the basement of Sulz, there are 3 soundproof music rooms with pianos, a computer lounge with computers and black-and-white printers, and a couple of vending machines. Sulz, like the rest of the quad, is also very close to Hewitt dining hall.

  • Bathrooms: There are two bathrooms, one gender-inclusive and one woman-only) on each Sulz floor. Each bathroom has a couple of toilet stalls, a few sinks, and a few shower stalls (around 4 of each). Bathrooms are cleaned by facilities on weekdays. Bathrooms are rarely full or very crowded, but if they are, it is easy to walk around the quad hallway to use another building’s bathrooms.
  • AC/Heating: Sulz is blessed with AC (it is the only first-year dorm that is). The units have adjustable temperature and fan speed. They switch over to the heating system around October.
  • Kitchen: Each floor has a small kitchenette in the lounge. The kitchenettes have four stove eyes, an oven, a microwave, and a sink. Sometimes, the sink can get cluttered with people leaving dishes to soak, but it’s always an option to go up or down a floor and use another floor’s sink to do dishes. The kitchens do not have fridges, so if you want to store food or perishables, it’s a good idea to look into buying a minifridge.
  • Lounge: Each floor has a lounge (which is where the kitchenette is) with some tables, some chairs, and a couple of couches or armchairs. The lounges also have TVs, but sometimes they require some fiddling to get working.
  • Laundry: Each floor has a laundry room with two washing machines and two dryers, and the eighth floor has a larger laundry room that students from any floor can use. It can be difficult to snag washing machines, especially on the weekend, so it can be helpful to do laundry early in the morning, late at night, or during the week. The app SpeedQueen can also be helpful (albeit sometimes unreliable) in seeing which floors have open washing machines and/or dryers that you can use.
  • Computers/Printing: Two computer lounges in the basement with a total of four printers. Also, easy access to Milstein and Diana printers.
  • Elevators: There are two elevators in the Sulz Lobby, and there is access to the Brooks elevator.
  • Hardwood/Carpet: Doubles and triples have linoleum floors, while quads have carpeted floors.
  • Storage: Each roommate has a large closet with lower drawers, a desk with drawers and a shelf, and two three-drawer dressers.

Room variety:

  • Corridor-style doubles, triples, and quads.

Bwog recommendation:

Personally, I loved living in Sulz. There was a heatwave in September, and it often felt like the only place of peace was in my icebox room. I was in a quad, so my room was a little bigger than the doubles, which was nice for hosting people, but we did have carpeting, which easily accumulated hair and crumbs. If you’re going to be in a quad, invest in a good vacuum–trust me. Sulz rooms, especially higher floors, get a lot of sunlight, and my roommates and I never needed to have big lights on unless it was dark out. Sulz tends to be a very social building; there are always people in the lounge studying, eating, or just hanging out. There were some issues with mice this year, but I think that’s an unavoidable factor when living in New York–just don’t keep open food or food trash in the room, and you’ll probably be fine.

Resident opinions:

  • “I loved living in Sulz!! Of course, the AC was a nice touch, but I lived in a quad, and the views were unlike any other. My roommates and I found a way to make it like home and give everyone their own section of the room, and I couldn’t have asked for a better first-year experience!!”
  • “i like sulz (especially bc we get the luxury of air conditioning) however the bathrooms are gross <3”
  • “Being in Sulz my first year was really nice. I liked having AC during the hotter months. It was helpful being close to the Lounge whenever I needed to do dishes or microwave something.”
