This week is Barnard’s Arts Week, hosted by the Student Experience and Engagement office! We’ve selected a couple of events for this round-up, but make sure to check out SEE’s Instagram or the posters around campus for the full list of events.
- Monday, September 30, 12 to 1 pm and 1 to 2 pm, Diana 302
- Learn about how to write a song as part of Barnard’s Arts Week! This introductory, interactive session will touch on different forms of songs and methods of collaboration.
Arts Week: Skill Build: Embroidery 101
- Tuesday, October 1, 12 to 1 pm and 1 to 2 pm, Diana Lounge (6th Floor)
- Bring items you want to mend or decorate—or come ready to learn! This hands-on session will introduce students to the art of embroidery.
Francophone Short Films in Harlem
- Tuesday, October 1, 6 to 8 pm, East Gallery (Buell Hall)
- Organized by the Francophone Short Film Festival and hosted by Columbia’s Maison Française, this event features six short films in French with English subtitles. The event will be followed by a Q&A with one of the filmmakers and a Manhattanville College professor.
Screening of On the Adamant (Sur l’adamant)
- Thursday, October 3, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Buell Hall
- This award-winning documentary, directed by Nicolas Philibert, tells the story of the Adamant, a floating mental health facility in the middle of the Seine that offers day programs to adults with mental illnesses. This screening shows a hopeful vision for the future of humanistic, community-driven mental health care.
Making and Knowing Dyeing Showcase with Bertha Estrada
- Friday, October 4, 10 am to 12 pm, Fayerweather 513
- In a nine-day residency, Bertha Estrada and her son, Mateo, shared their practices as dyers and weavers in Ahuirán, Mexico, including creating natural dyes from flowers. This showcase is the final result of that residency, where students will share textile projects alongside their intellectual findings.
Luciana Souza with Chico Pinheiro
- Saturday, October 5, 7:30 pm, Miller Theatre
- This jazz concert features Grammy Award-winning singer and composer Luciana Souza alongside guitarist and composer Chico Pinheiro. Their music combines jazz and Brazilian traditions.
