Happening in the World: Tito Mboweni, South Africa’s former finance and labour minister and first Black central bank governor, has died at the age of 65 following a brief illness. He was South Africa’s first labour minister from 1994 to 1999 under Nelson Mandela, and he then served as the finance minister from 2018 to 2021 under President Cyril Ramaphosa. Mboweni helped establish the post-apartheid labour legislation as well as the introduction of inflation targeting to achieve price stability. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: In another of its Starship tests, SpaceX launched another Starship, and the company was able to catch the first-stage booster with large metal arms as it descended toward the tower it launched from. The empty spacecraft atop the booster made its planned landing in the Indian Ocean an hour later. SpaceX intends to be able to recycle boosters from Starships, the biggest and most powerful rockets ever built. (AP)
Happening in NYC: The New York Road Runners is hosting the Staten Island Half Marathon today. The sold-out race, one of 60 races for adults and youth hosted by the non-profit, will feature more than 9,000 runners. With the TCS New York City Marathon happening in November, this half marathon often acts as a precursor of excitement and enthusiasm. (ABC)
Happening in Our Community: Columbia University’s Fall 2024 Blood Drive Campaign is dedicated to increasing awareness of breast cancer and supporting cancer patients through collecting donated blood for transfusions. The blood drive will last from 11 am to 5 pm on October 14, and it will be located at The Forum. More information can be found here.
