The culprit: a weasel!

Happening in the World: A shoe thief was believed to be on the loose at a kindergarten in southwestern Japan, but a security camera revealed the culprit to be a furry animal instead. Video footage found the culprit to be a small weasel, and weasels are known to stash items. The weasel had taken 21 shoes before it was caught on camera. It remains free. (AP)

Happening in the US: The remains of a teenager from York, Pennslyvania who vanished in 1973 have been identified as those of Ruth Elizabeth Brenneman. On October 10, 1973, two game wardens discovered decomposed remains in a wooded area in Union Township, but investigators were unable to identify the remains and the cause of death was undetermined. Through DNA analysis, interviews with family members, and perusals of court documents and newspaper articles, investigative genetic genealogy has greatly helped detectives solve cold cases and identify remains found long ago. Happening in NYC: Police are searching for the suspect of an attack on an 80-year-old man at the Grand Central-42nd Street station on November 20. According to the police, the man got into an argument with the suspect—a 6’3, 210-pound man with a light complexion—while boarding the 7 train, which resulted in the suspect pushing the man onto the subway platform. While the suspect remained on the train, first responders took the man to a hospital, where he suffered a hip injury but was in stable condition. (ABC)
