President Trump’s executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico becomes official. Editor’s warning: mentions of death.

Happening in the World: After an initial proposal by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last fall, Ukraine has offered to strike a deal for continued US military aid with President Donald Trump. In exchange for military aid, Ukraine offers mining access and permission to develop Ukraine’s untapped rare earth element reserves, such as lithium, titanium, and uranium. This deal would ensure continued military support for Ukraine, which is still at war with Russia. Also, it would allow the United States to reduce its dependence on China for rare minerals. (AP)

Happening in the US: Following President Donald Trump’s executive order signed on his first day in office, Google Maps has officially changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Users in the United States will only see Gulf of America, users in Mexico will only see Gulf of Mexico, and users in the rest of the world will see Gulf of Mexico, followed by Gulf of America in parenthesis. Google updated its map as soon as the US government changed the name on official maps. (NYT)
