Senator John Liu pushes to reclassify parking lots near Citi Field, paving the way for a casino and a High Line-inspired pedestrian bridge.
Happening in the World: Myanmar’s relief efforts from Friday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake will be complicated with the country embroiled in civil war, which began after the army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. The main resistance movement against military rule has declared a two-week ceasefire in affected areas, but the military government—which previously restricted aid to three million displaced people even before the earthquake—has yet to respond. Happening in the US: Freezing rain brought down trees and power lines in Michigan and Wisconsin, cutting electricity for thousands of people Sunday. Winds topping 70 mph were possible for the middle of Tennessee, with a chance of tornadoes and hail as large as 2 inches. More than 400,000 power outages were reported in Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin. Churches that had power were turned into warming centers as utilities worked to restore electricity, a job that will likely stretch into Monday. (AP)
Happening in NYC: Senator John Liu announced Sunday he’d introduce legislation to reclassify 50 acres of asphalt parking lots around the Mets ballpark as commercial property. This would allow for developments like Metropolitan Park, Steve Cohen’s $8 billion proposal for a sprawling casino and entertainment complex. In turn, Cohen has pledged to build the Flushing Skypark—a High Line-inspired pedestrian and bicycle bridge that would connect downtown Flushing and Willets Point. (Gothamist)
