What are you doing this March? Because I will be exploring the city!
Happening in the World: Portugal might be facing its third general election in three years after parliament scheduled a confidence vote on Friday. The center-right minority government has been under pressure for weeks due to Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s business ties, causing political tension throughout the country. Recently, it emerged that his firm receives monthly payments from a company with major gambling concessions granted by the government. Tuesday’s vote will most likely force the government to resign, and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has said a new election would occur preferably in mid-May. (AP)
Happening in the US: Trump has informed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to prepare to lose another 1,000 workers. This administration is the nation’s premier agency for weather and climate science, and with more cuts, it is possible that NOAA’s lifesaving forecasts might be inhibited. The new dismissals would be in addition to the already estimated 1,300 NOAA staff who have resigned or been laid off in the past few weeks. These cuts will affect the agency’s ability to predict hurricanes and tornadoes, oversee endangered species, and monitor the effect of humans on the Earth’s climate and ecosystems. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: NYC is offering a ton of free events and places to go during the month of March, and here are just a few! On March 17 you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by attending the parade! The event starts at 11 am and travels along Fifth Avenue with musicians, dancers, and other entertainers. Next, every Monday night at 7 pm, the MAD Bar & Lounge in the NH Collection New York Madison Avenue Hotel has a free contemporary jazz show. Lastly, you can visit the Wave Hill cultural center in the Bronx every Thursday for free admission. The center includes a 28-acre botanic garden and art exhibitions. (Gothamist)
Happening in Our Community: The Music & Arts Library and the Libraries’ Digital Scholarship program are hosting a workshop titled Intro to Graphic Music Notation as part of their Music Technology Workshops Series. This workshop, intended for musicians and non-musicians, will look at examples of graphic notation, help you to develop your own kind of graphic notation, and more!
