To add fluoride or remove fluoride, that is the question.
Happening in the World: The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) attacked a Jaffar Express Train earlier today. The train was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, carrying 400-450 passengers. The militant group bombed the track before storming the train, leaving three people injured. While it has not been confirmed by Pakistani officials, the BLA stated they are holding multiple passengers hostage. There is no internet coverage in the area the train is stuck in, so officials are yet to communicate with anyone on the train. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Utah is about to become the first state to ban the use of fluoride in public water systems. Governor Spencer Cox stated that he would sign the bill even though he doesn’t care about banning fluoride. Half of Utah doesn’t have fluoride in their water and dentists have said there hasn’t been any drastic differences between counties that have fluoride and those that do, despite most public-health agencies recommending fluoride be added to water to increase public oral health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that fluoride in public water systems decreases tooth decay by 25%, while critics claim that fluoride is linked to neurological problems and lower IQs. The bill will take effect beginning in May. Kentucky, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Montana all intend to follow Utah’s lead. (WSJ)
Happening in NYC: Philanthropists Lynne and Richard Pasculano donated $50 million to Lincoln Center to support contemporary dance programming. The initiative will be called the Pasculano Collaborative for Contemporary Dance, with the goal of bringing more people to the center and promoting contemporary dance within Lincoln Center. While the program has not begun organizing their initiative, there is a tentative plan to have performances in both winter and summer and to give students at Juilliard opportunities to perform. This is the largest gift Lincoln Center has ever received for programming. (NYT)
