Now that the COVID pandemic is over, the Trump administration states public health funding is no longer needed.

Editor’s warning: death

Happening in the World: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing over 1000 deaths from collapsed buildings and rubble. Another 2306 people were found to be injured, with 30 missing. Because of Myanmar’s civil war, movement around the country is difficult, complicating relief efforts. China and Russia were some of the first to provide foreign aid. (AP)

Happening in the US: Amid deportations of international students at colleges across the country, which targeted those present at pro-Palestinian marches, concerns arose over the facial recognition technology being used to identify protesters. These technologies are largely created by private groups for use by law enforcement. (AP)

Happening in NYC: As a result of the Trump administration’s decision to cancel federal health grants, New York State stands to lose over $360 million. This public health funding was originally allocated for COVID relief. Departments like the Office of Mental Health and Office of Addiction Services and Supports were targeted as the state works on finalizing their budget. (Gothamist)

Happening in our Community: Columbia University Players, Columbia’s premier theatre group for classic and contemporary plays, is performing at 2 pm and 7:30 pm in Glicker-Milstein Theater. Their show is called Machinal and follows a young woman pushed to her breaking point by an increasingly mechanical world.
