A wild turkey’s search for love takes her to Manhattan. Editor’s warning: mention of death.

Happening in the World: Ten days after he was ousted from office over his martial law declaration, the former conservative South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, appeared for the first time at his criminal trial Monday on high-stakes rebellion charges. Yoon’s decision to declare military rule and send troops to Seoul streets in December made him the country’s first president to be indicted while in office. If convicted of rebellion, he could face a life sentence or, theoretically, the death penalty. (AP

Happening in the US: The US Coast Guard crews were still searching on Monday for five people missing after a boat capsized off Florida’s Atlantic Coast. The Coast Guard said in a social media post that one was found dead, and crews rescued four others on Sunday about 46 miles north of West Palm Beach. One of those rescued said the vessel capsized on Friday, the Coast Guard said. Martin County Fire Rescue officials told news outlets that three of the rescued had non-life-threatening injuries. (AP

Happening in NYC: Astoria, the wild turkey, made her home on Roosevelt Island nearly a year ago. But she’s since flown the coop—and birders think she’s searching for a mate. “That’s the first time Astoria left Roosevelt Island that we know of in almost a year,” said David Barrett, the birder behind the Manhattan Bird Alert account on X. She was later seen wandering around East 56th Street—a far cry from the calm, green spaces of Roosevelt Island. As turkey mating season kicks in, Barrett notes, she’s unlikely to find a male turkey in Manhattan, where she’s believed to be the only wild turkey currently living. (Gothamist
