Happening in the World: Negotiations between envoys from Iran and the United States began in Oman over Tehran’s rapidly expanding nuclear program. Both countries are currently under half a century of enmity, with threats from President Trump to send airstrikes to Iran’s nuclear program if they are unable to reach a deal. Officials from Iran have also hinted at the use of nuclear military weapons. While Iran’s objective is to control national interests, the US’s priority is to dismantle the nuclear program and offer sanctions. (AP)

Happening in the US: In compliance with restrictions on sex-based discrimination in education, a US District Court Judge ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze Agriculture Department aid to Maine. A letter from Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated that the freezing of federal funds was due to disagreement arising on whether Maine was complying with Title IX. The court order came on the same day that Maine officials would not adhere to a ban on transgender athletes in high school sports. (AP)

Happening in NYC: On Friday, US immigration judged ruled that recent Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil can be deported. Khalil, who led pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia’s campus, was the first of many student protesters to be targeted for removal by the Trump administration. Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued that although Khalil had not committed any crimes, he was under risk of deportation because he had participated in “antisemitic protests and disruptive activities.” (Gothamist)
